When is the best time for a safari in Uganda?
Uganda sits on the equator, so temperatures stay pleasant all year. What changes is the rain — and that shapes trails, roads and wildlife viewing more than the calendar does.
The drier months
Broadly, the drier periods run from around June to September and from December to February. Forest trails are easier underfoot, roads are more predictable and animals gather near water in the savannah parks. These are also the busiest months, so gorilla permits and lodges book up earlier.
The wetter months
The rains usually fall around March to May and October to November, although weather patterns vary from year to year. Showers often come in the afternoon, the landscape turns deep green and there are fewer visitors. Trekking is still possible — just muddier.
For birdwatchers
Migratory birds are present roughly from November to April, which many birders consider the richest period. Resident species, including the shoebill in the Mabamba wetlands, can be looked for throughout the year.
Our advice
There is no bad month to visit Uganda — only different experiences. Tell us your dates and what matters most to you, and we will plan around the season rather than against it.
