Gorilla trekking in Bwindi: what to expect
Spending an hour with a mountain gorilla family is a privilege that depends on the gorillas' wellbeing coming first. Here is how a trekking day in Bwindi usually unfolds.
The morning briefing
Treks start early with a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. Visitors are assigned to a habituated gorilla family and a small group, and the rules of the encounter are explained.
The trek
Depending on where the family moved overnight, the walk can take from under an hour to several hours, on steep and often muddy forest slopes. Porters from local communities can be hired to carry bags and lend a hand — a direct way to support people living around the park.
The hour with the gorillas
Once the family is found, time with them is limited to protect them from stress and disease. Visitors keep their distance, speak softly, wear a mask when asked, and do not trek if they feel unwell.
Planning ahead
Permits are limited and are best secured well in advance; we confirm availability and the current permit price when planning your trip. Our guide on what to wear will help you prepare for the forest.
