Seeing the shoebill in Mabamba Swamp
The shoebill is one of Africa's most remarkable birds, and the Mabamba wetlands on the shores of Lake Victoria are one of the most accessible places in Uganda to look for it.
How the trip works
Mabamba lies west of Entebbe. The search happens from a small wooden canoe, guided through papyrus channels by local boatmen who know the swamp well. Early mornings are usually the calmest time to be on the water.
What to expect
Sightings are never guaranteed — this is a wild bird in a wild place. Even without a shoebill, the wetlands are rich in other birdlife, and the quiet of the channels is an experience in itself.
Travelling responsibly
We keep a respectful distance, stay quiet and never chase or crowd a bird for a photograph. Working with local boatmen means your visit supports the communities who live alongside the wetland.
